The Story behind 9th Day of Lunar New Year - Pai-Tian-Gong, 拜天公

On the eve of the 9th day of Chinese New Year - ie this Thursday, 14 Feb - the Hokkiens will be celebrating the Jade Emperor's birthday. According to my mom (who was told by my grandmom - who in turn was told by great grand mom and so on and so forth) - this day is more meaningful than the first day of CNY.

The story goes that Fujian people hid themselves in sugarcane plantations and they were said to be safe on the 9th day of First Lunar Month - when the armies retreated. That's why sugar cane is one of the sacrificial items used to thank the Tian-Gong, 天公.So no time for Dad and Mom to celebrate Valentine's Dayas Mommy will be busy preparing the sacrificial items and pray - hopefully I can stay awake till midnite.Anyone can share what are the items you all will be offering to Tian Gong? You know I am still young to know! Hehehhe ..
